Poetry Lesson Plans
Unit Information

The Poetry Lesson Plans Unit is one of the most enjoyable topics to plan for and teach in Middle School Language Arts.

Why? Because middle school language arts students love a good poetry lesson! They are actually quite prolific when deconstructing or writing any type of poetry. Every year I've asked my classes "what's so great about our poetry lesson plans? The response varies but one thing remains clear - to these struggling adolescents, poetry is a way to release their feelings and creativity appropriately. Poetry Lesson Plans Unit

Poetry Lesson Plans Unit
I generally teach an extensive poetry lesson unit in the 3rd quarter of middle school language arts. It serves as a much needed break from the preparation for state standardized testing and helps keep the students in their chairs as "spring fever" starts kicking in full blast.

A few things about my Poetry Lesson Plans Unit
Each lesson is written in the same format to make it simple. Each includes:

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Length
Set in minutes so that you can apply it to whatever type of block schedule your school follows.

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Objective
Quick explanation of my goals for the students by end of lesson.

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Materials
List of materials needed to implement lesson.

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Lesson
The structured lesson given by the teacher before the students begin to explore the work on their own. At KMS my mentor called them "mini-lessons" because the point is to make it short and sweet so as not to lose your students.

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Work Period
What the students will do as they begin to explore the topic on their own. This is where extension of the lesson activities, a "put into practice" if you will happens.

Introduction Poetry Lesson Plans Homework
Homework related to the lesson. I try to give something every day however, there may be days where homework is to finish work not completed during work period.

A final important note - The Right Hand Column will House any links necessary to complete the lesson. Be sure to check it before leaving the poetry lesson page.
