From My Classroom To Yours

4 Point Writing Rubric
REQ - All Summer in a Day

This 4 point writing rubric is used to assess the student's understanding of the elements of a short story lesson.

The REQ (Reading Evidence Question):What happened as a result of the classmates on Venus experiencing the sun when they go outside?

The 4 point Writing Rubric:
4: Student understands essential elements of the story such as problem, events, and solution. Knowledge is deeper than surface level, plot points, gets to the true theme of the story. May also give text support for response.

3: Student understands essential elements of the story such as problem, events, and solution. Knowledge is mostly based on events in the story, leaving out the true theme.

2: Student does not recognize all essential elements of the story. Focuses on the one element that is best understood. No deeper understanding of theme is acquired.

1: Student does not recognize the elements of a short story. Answer is purely based on one or two plot points that the student remembers. No grasp of the theme has taken place.

The 4 point Writing Rubric Answer Key:
4: The classmates really enjoy their time in the sun and realize that Margot was right about how it felt all along. They feel guilty because they took away her chance to experience the wonderful sun. They go to let her out of the closet, sad and ashamed.

3: The classmates have a good time in the sun. When it's over they remember that they've left Margot in the closet and she missed it. They go quietly to let her out.

2: The classmates have a lot of fun. They run and play and when the rain comes back they start to cry and are sad.

1: The kids stay outside for an hour before the rain comes back.
